GTM hiring

Technical support engineer or product engineer?

Choose technical support or product engineering by distinguishing customer investigation, recurring fixes, and product ownership.

Customer supportEngineering

Hire a technical support engineer when customers need sustained technical investigation, diagnosis, and clear resolution paths. Hire a product engineer when the main gap is building and maintaining product changes.

The roles should work closely, but customer investigation and product implementation are distinct responsibilities.

Locate the recurring work

WorkOwnership question
Reproduce a reported issueWho gathers enough context to investigate?
Explain behaviorWho helps the customer understand the product?
Identify a defectWho turns a report into actionable engineering evidence?
Implement a fixWho changes and releases the product?
Communicate progressWho keeps the customer informed?
Prevent repeat questionsWho improves documentation or product behavior?

If support engineers are expected to write production code, state the scope and review process.

Define the technical depth

Specify the systems, interfaces, and diagnostic tools the person will use. Clarify whether they need to inspect logs, reason about APIs, reproduce integrations, or work with specialist teams.

Do not assume that a customer-facing title means shallow technical work.

Use a fictional support case

Provide a synthetic customer report with incomplete information and a possible product defect. Ask the candidate to identify the next questions, plan a reproduction, and write an update.

Look for efficient investigation without asking the customer for unnecessary sensitive data. The candidate should distinguish a confirmed cause from a hypothesis.

Assess the engineering handoff

Ask for a concise issue report containing expected behavior, observed behavior, relevant conditions, and the evidence gathered.

A useful handoff should let engineering act without repeating the entire customer conversation. It should also protect private information.

Set boundaries and feedback loops

Define support coverage, escalation, incident responsibilities, and the route for recurring issues to influence product priorities.

Do not hire support solely to absorb problems that require product investment. The role should make patterns visible as well as help individual customers.
