GTM hiring

When sales learning needs an enablement owner

Decide when sales enablement needs dedicated ownership and distinguish learning systems from frontline sales management.

GTMRole design

Sales learning needs an enablement owner when onboarding, practice, materials, and reinforcement become recurring work that lacks sustained coordination. The role should help sellers perform useful work, not simply produce more training content.

Managers still need to coach and hold their teams accountable.

Identify the learning gap

SymptomQuestion
New sellers receive inconsistent onboardingWho owns the learning path and readiness checks?
Product messages varyWho maintains accurate, usable materials?
Training is completed but behavior does not changeHow is learning practiced and reinforced?
Managers repeat the same explanationsWhat could become a shared resource?
Sellers cannot find current guidanceWho organizes and updates it?

First determine whether the problem is knowledge, practice, unclear expectations, or a product/process issue.

Separate enablement from management

Enablement can design learning, coordinate subject experts, and provide tools for managers. It should not quietly replace the manager’s responsibility for individual coaching.

Clarify who decides commercial strategy, approves product claims, and evaluates performance.

Assess through a fictional learning problem

Give the candidate a synthetic pattern: sellers can describe features but struggle to connect them to buyer workflows.

Ask for a bounded learning intervention, a practice activity, and a way to check whether behavior changes. Look for a connection between the observed gap and the proposed support.

A slide deck alone is not a complete answer.

Inspect maintenance judgment

Ask how the candidate would keep materials current as the product and sales motion change. Who reviews accuracy, and how are obsolete resources retired?

The role needs a working relationship with product marketing, sales leaders, and technical experts.

Define an early outcome

An initial mandate might establish consistent onboarding for a specific role or improve one recurring sales behavior. State the evidence of usefulness and the support managers must provide.

Avoid assigning an entire revenue outcome to a training activity without acknowledging other influences.

Use the sales coaching exercise, product marketing mandate, and sales demo assessment. Discuss a GTM enablement hire with Refery.
