A product-demo interview should assess whether a seller connects accurate product capabilities to the buyer’s problem. Presentation polish is useful, but it should not outweigh discovery, claim accuracy, and judgment.
Use a fictional product or a supplied public-safe capability sheet. Do not expect candidates to know a complex product without preparation.
Provide a clear brief
Describe the fictional buyer, the current workflow, known priorities, and the capabilities the product actually has. Include one limitation.
State the preparation time, demo length, permitted tools, and whether the candidate may ask discovery questions.
Evaluate the demonstration
| Dimension | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Relevance | Selects capabilities that connect to the buyer’s stated problem |
| Discovery | Checks assumptions before committing to a narrative |
| Accuracy | Describes capabilities and limitations faithfully |
| Clarity | Explains the workflow in understandable language |
| Adaptation | Responds to questions without losing the purpose |
| Next step | Proposes a sensible action based on what was learned |
Do not reward a feature tour simply because it covers more screens.
Ask an unsupported capability question
Have the fictional buyer ask whether the product can do something outside the supplied brief.
Look for an honest answer, a useful clarification, and a plan to verify. The candidate should not invent a capability to maintain momentum.
Change the buyer’s priority
Introduce a new concern midway through the discussion. Ask the candidate to adapt the demonstration.
This reveals whether they are following a memorized script or using the buyer’s problem to choose what matters.
Review the reasoning afterward
Ask what they deliberately left out, what they learned, and whether the opportunity deserves a further step.
A strong seller should be able to explain why the demonstration served the conversation. If the buyer’s problem is a poor fit, acknowledging that can be better judgment than forcing a next meeting.
Keep the assessment fair
Use the same product information and evaluation criteria for comparable candidates. Offer an alternative format where needed to assess the same capabilities.
Use the sales discovery exercise and implementation handoff assessment. Discuss a sales hiring search with Refery.
