Assess a seller’s implementation handoff by checking whether the delivery team receives an accurate account of what was agreed, what remains uncertain, and who must be involved.
Closing a sale does not resolve every operational question. A good handoff makes those questions visible.
Prepare a fictional opportunity packet
Include synthetic discovery notes, an approved scope summary, a buyer’s requested timeline, and an informal comment about a feature that has not been committed.
Ask the candidate to prepare a concise handoff for an implementation team.
Review the handoff
| Element | Evidence to seek |
|---|---|
| Customer outcome | The workflow or problem the customer wants to improve |
| Agreed scope | What the company has actually committed to deliver |
| Open requests | Wishes or assumptions that remain unapproved |
| Stakeholders | Who uses, approves, and implements the solution |
| Dependencies | Access, data, integrations, and customer work required |
| Timing | Confirmed dates separated from requests or estimates |
| Ownership | Who resolves each remaining question |
The candidate should not quietly convert enthusiasm into a product promise.
Add pressure
Tell the candidate that the buyer expects the uncommitted feature at launch. Ask how they would address the misunderstanding with the customer and internal team.
Look for early, accurate communication and appropriate escalation. Avoid rewarding a promise made solely to keep the conversation comfortable.
Test the two-sided explanation
Ask for a short internal handoff and a short customer-facing next-step message. The messages should be consistent while containing only the information each audience needs.
Private internal debate does not need to appear in the customer message, but the message must not misrepresent the agreed scope.
Connect the exercise to the role
Some sellers hand off after signature; others remain involved through adoption. State what the actual job owns and assess accordingly.
Do not assume that strong sales performance proves careful delivery coordination. Gather evidence directly.
