GTM hiring

Scoping a first US sales hire

Define a first US sales hire around the target buyer, market-learning task, founder support, and commercial authority.

GTMMarket expansion

A first US sales hire needs a clear view of the buyer, the product’s current evidence in that market, and the founder support available. Do not assume a successful motion elsewhere transfers unchanged.

Separate market learning from executing a repeatable sales process. The role may include both, but expectations should reflect the uncertainty.

Create the territory brief

FieldWhat to specify
Target buyerThe role, workflow, and organization type being pursued
EvidenceWhat the company has actually learned about this market
Open assumptionsWhat still needs testing
Opportunity creationWho owns outbound, inbound, partnerships, and founder introductions
Sales supportAvailable demos, technical help, and delivery capacity
AuthorityWhat the seller can offer or approve
FeedbackHow market learning changes product and commercial decisions

Avoid using broad geographic coverage as the entire territory definition.

Define the founder’s continuing role

State where the founder will participate: discovery, credibility, product questions, negotiation, or strategic accounts.

A first seller should not discover after joining that every deal needs founder involvement but no time has been allocated for it.

Assess relevant motion experience

Ask candidates about the buying process they personally navigated, how opportunities were created, and what support they had.

Experience selling to a familiar market is useful, but the actual motion may differ. A candidate accustomed to abundant inbound demand may need different evidence for a role requiring self-generated pipeline.

Use a fictional market-entry case

Provide a fictional product with evidence from one market and limited information about a new buyer group. Ask the candidate to plan early conversations and identify what would justify focusing the search.

Look for curiosity, disciplined qualification, and willingness to revise assumptions. Do not reward an unsupported revenue promise.

Set a learning and execution plan

Define early outputs such as a clearer buyer map, documented objections, and a tested outreach approach alongside appropriate commercial responsibilities.

Use the self-generated pipeline assessment, founder-led sales handoff, and US team readiness guide. Discuss a GTM search with Refery.
