Engineering hiring

How to scope a brand design engineer role at a startup

Define ownership of marketing websites, launch experiences, visual systems, accessibility, and implementation before hiring a brand design engineer.

Design hiringEngineering hiring

Hire a brand design engineer when the recurring work combines visual design and implementation of the company's public digital experience. Define which surfaces the person owns, who sets the message, and who maintains the result. A strong portfolio does not resolve an unclear role.

The title is not a standardized job description. One team may need an engineer who can translate an established visual system into a reliable website. Another may need someone who can develop the visual direction and implement it. State which capability must be present on entry.

Start with a surface and responsibility map

List the work the company expects over the coming planning period. Separate recurring ownership from occasional assistance.

Surface or responsibilityClarify before sourcing
Marketing websitePage implementation, component system, content editing, and release ownership
Product launchesWho supplies the positioning, assets, product facts, and approval?
Visual systemDoes the hire create the direction or work within an existing one?
Interactive demonstrationsWhat can be simulated, and what must accurately reflect the product?
Accessibility and performanceWho evaluates the result and maintains agreed standards?
Ongoing changesCan marketers update routine content without engineering support?

Do not bundle product design, brand strategy, copywriting, frontend engineering, video production, and acquisition strategy into one role without deciding which responsibilities are essential.

Identify the real bottleneck

If the team has clear designs but struggles to implement and maintain them, engineering depth may be the primary requirement. If no visual direction exists, a candidate who only implements supplied designs may need a design partner. If the message is unclear, better animation will not settle the positioning.

Compare this work with product design engineering, which may focus more heavily on the experience inside the product. The distinction is the ownership and workflow, not whether one candidate can ever do both.

Review a shipped experience from brief to maintenance

Ask the candidate to explain a permitted public project. Establish what they personally designed, built, and maintained. Review the starting brief, constraints, collaboration, and choices they changed after feedback.

Inspect how the experience behaves when content becomes longer, the viewport narrows, or an interaction is unavailable. Ask how another person would update the page and how a risky release could be reversed.

The W3C accessibility introduction describes accessibility as enabling people with disabilities to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the web. Include that usability perspective in the review rather than treating visual polish as the complete result.

Use an exercise that exposes judgment

Fictional exercise: Provide an approved product message, a small visual system, and a simple launch-page brief. Ask the candidate to propose an implementation approach and explain one interaction. Include a constraint: the content owner must be able to update the page later.

Assess hierarchy, clarity, implementation choices, and maintainability. Do not require a finished unpaid campaign or ask the candidate to redesign your company's actual website as a hiring task. Keep the exercise bounded and use shared criteria.

Define the working relationship in the offer brief

Name the partner responsible for product claims, the person who approves visual direction, and the owner of technical releases. Explain how competing requests will be prioritized and how much ongoing maintenance the role includes.

Useful success criteria describe a dependable publishing and design capability: understandable pages, reusable components, controlled releases, and a clear editing workflow. Avoid promising that an individual hire can guarantee conversion or search-ranking gains.
